Recipe: Graham Crackers
I have tried way too many graham cracker recipes; some were too spiced like gingerbread, others were so buttery they felt like dessert. But these, these ones are golden.
Slather them with cream cheese, use them to make a Nutella sandwich, chop them up and add them to ice cream, or pulse them in the food processor to use for a graham cracker crust.
These are so good, so good you see.
This recipe is easily doubled…and should be doubled!
Whole Wheat Honey
Graham Crackers
2 ¼ cups whole wheat flour
½ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ cup honey
¼ cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup butter, melted
½ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ cup honey
¼ cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup butter, melted
1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
2. Melt the butter in glass bowl in the microwave or on the stove in a pan. Set aside.
3. In the bowl of your Kitchen-Aid, stir together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon.
4. Add the honey, water, vanilla and melted butter.
5. Stir on low until the dough comes together.
6. Use cookie sheet-sized parchment paper to roll out the dough on and then use it to line the cookie sheets.
7. Lay one piece of cookie sheet-sized parchment paper on the counter.
8. Place the ball of dough on the parchment paper.
9. Lay the other piece of parchment paper on top of the ball of dough. Begin to spread the dough with your hands.
10. Use the rolling pin to roll the dough between the
pieces of parchment paper. Roll until the dough is the size of the whole
cookie sheet, trying to keep it as even as possible.
11. Remove the top piece of parchment paper. Use
a pizza cutter or biscuit cutter or cookie cutter or ravioli cutter to cut the
graham crackers however you would like. Use a fork to prick holes on the
surface of the crackers. Remove each cracker and place it on the cookie sheet
leaving a little space in between.
12. Bake around 12-14 minutes, depending on if you want
them nice and soft or crunchy.
I freeze these in a big Ziploc bag and pull them out as
needed for school lunches or to bring while running errands.

Tom's of Maine Website Sale
Normally I would use a code like this on clearance items to boost that 20% off into greater savings.
For example, Tom's Energizing Bars 2 pack is normally $4.99 and it's on clearance for $3.80.
With the extra 20% off that is $3.02, or 40% off retail.
Typically, if I shop the hot deals I can get Tom's of Maine 50% off, so this isn't the best out there.
However, if you are completely out and need something, than 20% off is better than paying full price.
My advice: buy something only if you absolutely need it now. Otherwise wait until the next hot deal and stock up then.

Navel Oranges are in Season
I am seeing Organic Navel Oranges on sale at nearly every store for just $0.99 a lb.
So don't pay more than that!
The few I've gotten recently have been delicious. They are in season, which means not only do they have more flavor, but they have more nutrients.
Do your best to buy local, as the flavor and health benefits are greater the shorter amount of time they spend in a delivery truck.
Navel oranges contain:
Vitamin C
Fiber
Beta Carotene
Calcium
B 6
Potassium
Magnesium
These nutrients and vitamins boost the immune system, promote healing, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, boost production of hemoglobin in the blood stream, prevent cancer, help the body absorb iron, and help build strong healthy bones.
Who knew an orange packed such a punch!
Did you know the Navel Orange is actually a 200 year old clone?

1,000,000 Voices, but Monsanto's pockets are deeper.
I wonder how we can ask the candidates about how they feel about this issue? I would love to know if any of them have the guts to defy Monsanto and say they would pass a bill to demand GMO labeling. That might just sway my vote. |

$4.50 for a bar of organic soap? I just bought Dr. Brommer's for $2.50.
I was curious about these:
What are they? Soap Nuts. They are the nuts off a tree that you use instead of laundry soap. Apparently they work. I wish the soap nut tree fairy would give these to me so I could try them. I am so curious. They are on sale: Learn more about them HERE.
Found a new magazine: Clean Eating
My sister gave me a stack of magazines to read the other day and tucked in the middle was one I had never seen before.
Clean Eating.
I was skeptical at first, thinking it would be a little too clean for me, ie RAW, or something like that.
Instead I found myself reading every single article, drooling over every single recipe, and even giddy over the advertisements as I discovered a plethora of new resources to explore.
The current offer is $15 for 8 issues.
I am hoping to find an every better deal to post.
In the meantime, check out their website:

You can use this oil to replace your cooking oil, but it is also fantastic for homemade soaps, lotions, deodorants, lip balm, etc etc.

Simple Switch: Baking Powder
How do your biscuits grow?
It may come as a surprise to you (it did to me) that regular old baking powder contains aluminum (go ahead-check your label) as a leavening agent.
The good news is it is easy to avoid this extra dose of aluminum simply by buying an aluminum-free brand next time you run out!
I have bought the Rumford brand (at Safeway) and Bob's Red Mill (at Big Lots, weird).
It costs slightly more but I think it is worth it. I also just read about a new brand called Argo that I definitely want to try!
David Lebovitz (a professional baker/cooker and cookbook author) recommends switching to aluminum-free baking powder because it will improve the taste of your baked goods.
Baking powder doesn't last forever, if you want to check to see if yours is still good:
- Drop 1 teaspoon baking powder into 1/3 cup of hot water; if it bubbles and fizzes then it's still good!
Over exposure to aluminum could result in skeletal deformities, brain degeneration and damage to the nervous system.

Whole Foods best deals of the week courtesty of The Frugal Find
The Frugal Find puts up a nice list each week of the best deals to score at Whole Foods. I wish she added produce prices as well. On the other hand, she's in Oregon and the prices aren't always accurate for us in the Bay Area anyway.
If you or anyone you know would like to be our Whole Foods Gal let me know. I would love to have someone report back on their Whole Foods shopping trips each week and tell us the produce sales and grocery store steals.
2 Things I'd like to add:
1- if you bring your kids make sure you stop at the service desk before you start shopping. Each child gets a free treat to make your shopping go a little smoother.
and
2- in the fresh deli section they sell raw pizza dough from the bakery in bags for just $1.29.
Take it home, roll it out, top with all your organic goodness. Nice.
