Even though my youngest is only 4, I actually missed this entire innovention! It was just after he graduated from baby food that I saw these pouches in everyone's baby's mouths. It's a great idea. Baby self feeds. No mess. No battle with the spoon. And they are filled with wholesome goodness. I like the idea of being able to make your own and controlling the ingredients that go into these pouches. And, of course, the reduced waste to landfills.
My son always had a difficult time with the appearance of food as well. I wonder if babies are more likely to try new foods if they can't see them? Eating food hidden in the pouch does require a bit of faith on the consumer's part does it not?

Sunscreen Deal

Get a $36 bottle of natural sunscreen for $15.00 plus tax.

Highlights

  • Up to 97% certified organic inactive ingredients
  • Free of parabens, petroleums, preservatives, PABA's, oxybenzone and nano-sized particles
  • Organic mineral face products for the whole family
Natural Sunscreens are ALWAYS expensive. I've tried a few that didn't work, like Yes To Carrots Sunscreen-- we all got burned. So I am thinking about giving this one a try. Typical sunscreens may prevent skin cancer, but they are CAUSING cancer internally. That's just not right.

Always choose a sunscreen that is paraben free and oxybenzone free. Even if that means paying more.

Black Bean Chocolate Cake

Chocolate cake - 4868339

I got tricked into eating Black Bean Chocolate Cake the other day at Zumba.
It didn't taste like black beans. Just chocolate cake.

The recipe was easy enough. A box of chocolate cake mix, a can of black beans-- drained and pureed, and a half a cup of water.

The problem is, I am not that interested in boxed cake.
Too many ingredients I can't pronounce.

So I decided to try my own tonight from scratch.
And it was fantastic.

Black Bean Chocolate Cake

2 cups sugar
1 3/4 cups flour
3/4 cup cocoa powder
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp salt
1 can black beans, drained, and pureed in the blender
1/2 cup water

Powdered sugar for dusting-- no need for frosting with this recipe unless you really really want too.

I added some Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips for fun as I think there is nothing that goes better with chocolate than chocolate. But they aren't needed.

I mixed it all together in my KitchenAid.

Preheat Oven to 350.
Bake for 30-35 minutes or until done.

No milk, no eggs, no oil or butter!
Most of my ingredients were organic to boot!
Awesome awesome awesome.
I love when we can eat well and not feel deprived as we try to eat real food.

How to Save Money: Changing your shopping strategy.

I was talking to a friend the other day about my enchiladas.
I was making up 4 batches at one so that I could put a couple of casseroles in the freezer.
She mentioned she would love to be able to make freezer dinner, but she couldn't afford to buy the extra ingredients to make more.

This made me realize just how different my shopping strategy is from the majority of households.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems like the majority of people spend their weekly grocery money on the food they are going to eat THAT week.

I don't do this.

I buy the items that are the best price and as much of it as I can.

For example:
Let's say I have $100 to spend each week.
I will use $60-$70 of it on sales, clearance, and bulk.
And only $30-40 on things I need for the week like; milk, cheese, fresh produce.

When I plan my weekly menu I look at the things I already have on hand from previous bulk purchases and then I only have to get a few missing items.

So if The Grocery Outlet has organic pasta for only $0.89 a lb I will buy 10-20 of them.
That way when I am making pasta dishes, I do not have to run to the store and pay $3 a lb for it.
I already have it in my food storage and I paid 1/3 of the price for it. And I have enough to make several Rotini Casseroles for my freezer if I want.

If Annie's Organic Black Beans are on sale, I will buy a case of them. I do not "need" a case of black beans for that week, but I know I will use them eventually. Then on Taco Tuesday, I can grab a can of black beans I paid $0.99 for instead of running to the store and paying $1.89.

Buying when the deal is hot saves you a ton of money in the long run. It takes a few weeks, even months, to get into the groove, but once you make the transition, you will see your dollar stretch farther and farther. In addition, you will have fewer and fewer last minute trips to the store for that "one thing" that ends up being "six things". An added bonus is you usually have all the food on hand for several different emergency dinners when you need dinner on the table fast.

If needed- start out small. Set aside $20 a week for bulk purchases, and slowly convert over until the majority of your money is going toward sales and deals.

It's amazing to see your storage shelves fill up with food without any change to your budget.
Good luck!

Keep your Produce Fresher Longer

Spreebird has a deal for 2 bluapple produce keepers.
You get 2 for $5, plus $3 for shipping.
So $8 total.

They absord the ethelene gas made by your fruits and veggies to prevent them from wilting, browning, rotting, etc.

I asked what exactly what is IN the bluapple, since I don't want to be adding harmful chemicals to my refrigerator.

The 2 main ingredients are

Sodium Permangate

Natural Zeolite

Sodium Permangate is an inorganic salt compound.
Natural Zeolite is volcanic ash.

Ben and Jerry's: going GMO Free by 2014

A big fat pat on the back to Ben and Jerry's for making the goal to be completely GMO FREE by 2014.
After I read their announcement I sent them an email of support and asked for the list of 22 GMO Free flavors. I got a response in less than 24 hours. (nice work Ben and Jerry!) I firmly believe our biggest, most valuable vote is our dollar bill. Spend it wisely.

The 22 NON-GMO Flavors:
Chocolate
Coffee
Milk & Cookies
Pistachio Pistachio
Vanilla
Strawberry
Cherry Garcia
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
Chocolate Fudge Brownie
Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl
Chunky Monkey
Coffee, Coffee BuzzBuzzBuzz
Half Baked
Mint Chocolate Chunk
Chocowlate Chip
Peanut Butter Cup
Mud Pie
Chocolate Nougat Crunch
What a Cluster
Red Velvet Cake
Chocolate Therapy
Mint Chocolate Cookie
Sweet Cream and Cookies

From their website:
As we've watched the debate in California on GMO labeling, it is clear to us that consumers in California and around the country want to know whether their food contains genetically modified ingredients (GMO). Ben & Jerry’s passionately believes that everyone has the right to know what’s in their food.
Here’s our status: currently, in the United States and Canada, 80% of Ben & Jerry’s ingredients by volume are already non-GMO and 22 of our flavors are fully non-GMO. We commit to sourcing non-GMO ingredients for all our products everywhere by year-end 2013. In fact all our products made outside North America are already non-GMO.
We will track our progress as we complete this conversion, with public updates on our website. Beginning now, and throughout 2013, we will transition packaging so that all Ben & Jerry’s products will be labeled with respect to GMO by 2014.
We have a long history of siding with consumers and their right to know what’s in their food. We fought long and hard for labeling of rBGH, which was the first genetically engineered technology used in the US food system. We thank and encourage all those who are continuing this fight in support of transparency and the consumer’s right to know.

Great price on a chest freezer from Lowes.com

Not sure how many they have in stock, so you may need to decide quick on this one.

Lowes.com is offering up a Frigidaire 12.9 cu ft chest freezer for $266.40 SHIPPED.
Use code 470011506922654 to get 10% off
Normally $479.00 plus shipping.

A full sized upright freezer is usually 18-22 cu ft- to give a size comparison.
I think mine is 21.9 or something weird like that.

I just bought my freezer this summer and I am so excited to have the extra storage space. I bought 30 lbs of organic beef when Whole Foods was having a fantastic sale. I cooked up organic chicken, shredded it, divided it into 1 cup portions and froze those too. I buy produce in season and freeze them, like strawberries and bell peppers.

It allows me to take advantage of food in their season and coupons/sales. It also means I have healthy clean food on hand and at the ready which reduces my last minute trips to the store or fast food drive thru.

All in all- I have been very happy with my investment of a garage freezer.

Barbara's Cereal Coupon

Mambo Sprouts has a few new coupons for January.
Scroll through them and see if there are products you use.

Or perhaps something new you want to try.
Barbara's Classics Brown Rice Crisps

The one that interests me is the $1 off Barbara's High Fiber Cereal

Rolled Banana Snack
Spread a banana with peanut butter, slice into bite size pieces, roll in rice krispie cereal. Breakfast sushi!

I just saw this idea on pinterest where you slice bananas, cover in peanut butter, and roll in rice krispies.
Barbara's makes a nice rice krispies alternative called Brown Rice Crisps. It's not organic, but it's better than General Mills.

$29 for a $60 Voucher towards Organic Foods from Blue Green Organix

Tppr has a deal for a $60 voucher for only $29 for Blue  Green Organix.

$29 for $60 to Spend at Bluegreen Organix
I am seriously tempted simply because they have organic-- nitrite/nitrate free bacon!!!

I am giving myself an hour or so to think about, as I hate impulse purchases.

Organic Meats are very expensive, so when you factor in the $31 off, they are about the same price as conventional meats. (if you buy the sale items and stick to around $60 total) They also have cheeses, body care, and a few others.

Take a look around and decide for yourself.
I know I am going to browse.

HOT Deal Alert! Crockpots for $7.49

CVS is offering up their Christmas goods at 75% off.
This includes the small appliances and toys they stocked for Christmas.

I got a huge wall map of the world for $4.99 instead of $20!
I am pretty excited about it.
Crock Pot Classic Slow Cooker Assorted Colors, 5 Quart
Their 5 QT Crockpots that are normally $30 are ringing up at just $7.49.
I thought about buying a back up, but my Crockpot is pretty new and I am crossing my fingers I don't need a back up for years.
Then I thought about buying 3 or 4 to store away for when I get invited to Bridal Showers and Weddings.
Then I realized I can't even remember the last time I got invited to a Bridal Shower or Wedding.

So that means there are still about 8 Crockpots left on the shelves at my local store.
How about yours?

If you find any treasures, please let is know in the comments. We'd love to hear about your bargains!

Farm Fresh To You Deal

Groupon is offering up a deal for a Farm Fresh to You box.
This is for San Francisco area residents and businesses.
Rackmultipart20121221-7333-1ipa9cw_grid_6
I did this deal last summer and I had mixed feelings.

I love organic produce.
And I love buying local.

However-- I shop discounts and sales.
If apples are on sale we eat apples.
If strawberries are on sale we eat strawberries.

I try my best not to buy produce at it's premium price and that is exactly what you are doing when you buy these boxes.

It was also very difficult for me to use the produce I received. I would get 2 oranges (for my family of 5) and then 4 bunches of dill.
Really? How about 5 oranges and 1 bunch of dill?

It was nice to get it delivered to my door.
And it was nice experimenting with foods I normally wouldn't buy- like leeks.

So my recommendation is this.
Buy the deal.
You get $31 worth of organic produce for $15.
Then cancel.

Unless you decide it's fantastic-- then continue.

But it's worth the one time deal just for fun.
