The difference between a Monsanto Mandarin and a Mandarin from the backyard
On the left we have a store bought Mandarin, a Monsanto variety. I picked a small one, but the truth is the rest were twice this size. They are specifically grown to be bigger and weigh more so that they can charge you more, while the bigger size makes you think you are getting more fruit, when you are actually just getting more water. The biggest difference is obviously the pigment. The one from the backyard tree is dark and rich in color. Guess how it tasted? The color absolutely correlates to the intensity of flavor in the fruit. Washed out color, washed out taste. Deep orange color, vibrant tangy taste. Guess which one has more vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, potassion, magnesium, and fiber? You guessed it. The deeper pigment also means a higher density of nutrients.
So you can have your enlarged water Mandarin from Monsanto. Or your nutrient dense, flavor rich, all natural Mandarin from the your backyard. Unless of course, Monsanto gets their way, in which case it will be illegal for you to grow your own food.
